Mark Watson is a New Zealand-based photographer and author specialising in landscape, adventure and travel photography.
With his partner Hana Black, Mark spent close to four years bikepacking nearly the length of the Americas – from Alaska to central Patagonia – via the road less travelled, generally following the American Cordillera. Read a route summary and see maps here. The pair were forced home from Chile by Covid and are currently enjoying life back in NZ, while plotting their return to South America to finish their journey.
In 2013 Mark co-authored his first book, Our Mountains, with writer Paul Hersey. This collaborative effort incorporated over 100 images that captured on 15 mountains all over New Zealand. This was followed in 2015 by the acclaimed Te Araroa – Walking New Zealand’s 3000 km trail – a photographic exploration of New Zealand’s long distance trail and its diverse landscapes. In September 2016, Photographing Aoraki Mount Cook – A guide to the best walks and photography locations was published.
No strangers to long distance cycling trips, in 2011 Mark and Hana completed a 9 month/13,000km cycle tour from China’s Tibetan Plateau to Sumatra, Indonesia through South East Asia. They have also toured in the Philippines. You can read about that here.
Mark’s photos have been been published internationally in books, magazines, advertising, catalogues, calendars, websites and guidebooks. Clients have included Macpac, Ngai Tahu Pounamu, Texco, Cactus Equipment, Ground Effect, Wilderness Magazine, American Express, National Geographic Adventure and New Zealand Geographic.
