Te Araroa

Walking New Zealand's 3,000 kilometre trail

During the first half of 2015 I tramped the length of New Zealand – from Cape Reinga to Bluff, via the 3000 km Te Araroa trail, New Zealand’s long distance walkway, photographing the landscapes and locations encountered along the trail as I walked.

I wanted to find out for myself what the Te Araroa trail entailed; to photograph both it and the view of New Zealand that it presents. Telling not only the story of the landscape of the Te Araroa Trail; invoking a sense of place, but also creating a narrative of my own through-walk experience; illustrating the changing seasons and conditions. The result is a book of intimate and honest New Zealand images from nearly six months on the trail; they’re an expression of the ‘here and now’ of walking the trail. Another of my aims with the book’s photography was to inspire others to go and appreciate the fulfilment and simplicity that comes from moving across the land on foot.

For myself this project has been synthesis of two of my greatest passions and I’m excited to have had the opportunity to express not only New Zealand’s diverse landscape through my lens – but also to bring more exposure to New Zealand’s national trail.

Keep an eye on my blog for updates about the book and information about my walk. Look me up on Facebook and Instagram too.

... the trail’s more subtle spirit moves in images like these, and it takes a superb photographer, but also one inured to the trail, to see it. This is a thrilling book because Mark Watson, like the trail itself, has made the land new again.
